The reading guide

Study slowly.
Connect thoughtfully.

A practical companion for reading the TRIVITR books and developing a more deliberate study habit.

Choose a question, not a prediction

Begin a study session with one clear question: What is this concept? What conditions does this rule require? How does the author reach this interpretation?

Read in three layers

Keep three headings in your notebook: the source passage, the author’s explanation and your own observations. This makes it easier to see where a statement comes from.

Build a working glossary

Write the technical term, the translation used in the book and a short definition. If another source uses the term differently, record that difference rather than silently replacing it.

Work through the example

Reproduce the reasoning step by step using the information actually supplied. Mark any assumptions. Do not fill gaps with the outcome you hope to find.

Make uncertainty useful

Keep a questions page. When two statements appear to conflict, check their context, method and qualifying conditions. Some questions need further reading rather than a quick resolution.

Review before advancing

Summarise the chapter without looking at it. If you can explain its main ideas and limitations clearly, move forward. If not, revisit the definitions and examples.

A simple reading session

Read one short section, write a summary, work through its example and record one unresolved question. Begin the next session by reviewing those notes.

Frequently asked questions

Questions before you begin.

Where should a beginner start learning Vedic astrology?

Begin with the meanings of graha (planet), rashi (sign), bhava (house) and lagna (ascendant) in Jyotish Fundamentals. Then use BPHS Volume 1 to start a connected study of the classical text.

Which Brihat Parashara Hora Shastra book should I read first?

Start with BPHS Volume 1 for the foundational vocabulary. Read Volumes 2 and 3 in order as your understanding of houses, chart dynamics and yogas develops.

Do I need to read all 27 Nakshatra books in order?

No. Choose the individual Nakshatra you want to understand, such as Krittika, Rohini, Mrigashira or Ardra. Return to Jyotish Fundamentals if the technical vocabulary is unfamiliar.

When should I read Decoding Transit about Dasha and Gochar?

Read Decoding Transit after learning the basics of a birth chart and the separate meanings of Dasha (a timing period) and Gochar (planetary transit).

What does a retrograde planet mean in Jyotish?

A vakri or retrograde planet appears to move backward against the sky from Earth. Interpretation depends on the method and the rest of the chart; retrograde alone is not a complete judgment.
