Retrograde Planets in Vedic Astrology: What Does Vakri Mean?

Learn what retrograde describes in the sky, what Vakri means in Jyotish and how to read a claim about a retrograde planet carefully.

· By

When someone says that a planet is “retrograde,” they do not mean that it has stopped in space and reversed its orbit. Retrograde motion describes a change in the planet’s apparent direction against the background of the sky as seen from Earth. Earth and the other planets keep moving around the Sun. For an outer planet such as Mars or Saturn, the effect can be seen when Earth passes it in its orbit. NASA’s explanation of Mars retrograde is a helpful starting point for the astronomy.

What does Vakri mean in Jyotish?

In Jyotish, vakri is the term commonly used for a planet whose apparent motion is retrograde. This is a description of its motion in the chart, not an interpretation by itself. A natal retrograde planet is one marked retrograde at the time of birth; a transiting retrograde planet is observed during a later period. These are different questions, and it helps to identify which one a text or teacher is discussing.

Readers sometimes encounter claims that a vakri planet is always weak, always powerful or always a sign of delay. None of these short formulas can replace the conditions of a specific interpretive method. Before accepting a conclusion, ask which planet is involved, what its placement and chart context are, and which source or technique supports the statement. Classical discussions of planetary motion and strength also require more care than a single slogan about retrograde planets.

A practical way to study retrograde planets

  1. Start with the astronomical term. Understand what the apparent change of direction means before reading an astrological interpretation.
  2. Identify the chart question. Is the passage about a birth chart, a present transit or a calculation of planetary strength?
  3. Read the whole rule. Record any conditions and exceptions rather than keeping only the word “retrograde.”
  4. Compare interpretations carefully. Keep a source’s statement separate from your observation of an example chart.

This approach will not give a one-line prediction. It will give you a more reliable way to read and compare explanations of vakri grahas. For the underlying vocabulary of grahas, signs and houses, begin with Jyotish Fundamentals. For a method of working with classical passages, see the Reading Guide.

Questions readers often ask

Does retrograde mean a planet is moving backwards?

It appears to move backwards against the sky from our viewpoint on Earth. The planet does not reverse its orbit around the Sun.

Is a retrograde planet automatically bad in a birth chart?

No single label gives a complete interpretation. First establish the method being used and the other chart factors that the method requires.
